Overview

What Sciatica Actually Is

Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can come from a disc herniation, foraminal stenosis, facet overgrowth, or occasionally the piriformis. Treatment that works depends entirely on which one it is, which is why the exam and targeted diagnostic work come before any procedure.

Also called: lumbar radiculopathy, pinched nerve

Symptoms patients describe

  • Pain running from the back into the buttock, thigh, or calf
  • Electric or burning quality rather than a dull ache
  • Numbness or tingling into the foot
  • Pain worse sitting and better walking, or the reverse

Diagnosis

How It's Confirmed Here

  1. 01

    Hands-on exam

Each structure is loaded separately so the source is narrowed before any imaging is ordered.

  2. 02

    Imaging review

Your existing films are reviewed independently by Dr. Hyzy — not just the outside report.

  3. 03

    In-room ultrasound

Dynamic imaging while you move, so tissue quality and behavior are seen live.

  4. 04

    Diagnostic guided injection

When more than one structure could be responsible, a targeted block confirms which one is.

FAQs

Sciatica — Questions Patients Ask

How fast does sciatica improve?
