IT Band Syndrome Treatment
Pain on the outside of the knee from friction and load on the IT band.
Overview
What IT Band Syndrome Actually Is
IT band syndrome is a training-load and hip-strength problem that shows up at the knee. Treating the painful spot without addressing hip abductor capacity and running or cycling mechanics reliably produces a recurrence.
Also called: iliotibial band syndrome, runner's knee
Symptoms patients describe
- Sharp pain on the outside of the knee at a predictable distance or time
- Pain going downhill or downstairs
- Symptoms that resolve with rest and return with mileage
- Tenderness just above the outer knee
Diagnosis
How It's Confirmed Here
- 01
Hands-on exam
Each structure is loaded separately so the source is narrowed before any imaging is ordered.
- 02
Imaging review
Your existing films are reviewed independently by Dr. Hyzy — not just the outside report.
- 03
In-room ultrasound
Dynamic imaging while you move, so tissue quality and behavior are seen live.
- 04
Diagnostic guided injection
When more than one structure could be responsible, a targeted block confirms which one is.

FAQs
IT Band Syndrome — Questions Patients Ask
Will foam rolling fix it?
It may reduce symptoms temporarily. Hip strength and load management are what change the outcome.
