Overview

What Meniscus Tears Actually Is

Degenerative meniscal tears are extremely common in adults over forty and are frequently present in knees that do not hurt. The evidence for arthroscopic partial meniscectomy in degenerative tears is poor. Acute mechanical tears that truly lock the knee are a different category and deserve a surgical opinion.

Symptoms patients describe

  • Pain along the joint line
  • Catching, clicking, or a sense of locking
  • Swelling a day or two after activity
  • Pain twisting or pivoting

Diagnosis

How It's Confirmed Here

  1. 01

    Hands-on exam

Each structure is loaded separately so the source is narrowed before any imaging is ordered.

  2. 02

    Imaging review

Your existing films are reviewed independently by Dr. Hyzy — not just the outside report.

  3. 03

    In-room ultrasound

Dynamic imaging while you move, so tissue quality and behavior are seen live.

  4. 04

    Diagnostic guided injection

When more than one structure could be responsible, a targeted block confirms which one is.

Meniscus Tears — Questions Patients Ask

My MRI shows a meniscus tear — is surgery next?

Usually not for a degenerative tear. A true locked knee that will not straighten is the exception.
