Overview

What Hip Labral Tears Actually Is

The labrum deepens the socket, stabilizes the joint, and maintains the fluid seal that nourishes cartilage. Tears are often associated with femoroacetabular impingement and should be characterized on MRI. A diagnostic intra-articular injection is the cleanest way to confirm that the pain is coming from inside the joint.

Symptoms patients describe

  • Groin pain with deep flexion or rotation
  • Clicking or catching in the front of the hip
  • Pain sitting for long periods or getting out of a car
  • A C-shaped grip around the hip when describing the pain

Diagnosis

How It's Confirmed Here

  1. 01

    Hands-on exam

Each structure is loaded separately so the source is narrowed before any imaging is ordered.

  2. 02

    Imaging review

Your existing films are reviewed independently by Dr. Hyzy — not just the outside report.

  3. 03

    In-room ultrasound

Dynamic imaging while you move, so tissue quality and behavior are seen live.

  4. 04

    Diagnostic guided injection

When more than one structure could be responsible, a targeted block confirms which one is.

Does every labral tear need arthroscopy?
