Overview

What Snapping Hip Syndrome Actually Is

External snapping involves the IT band flicking over the greater trochanter; internal snapping involves the iliopsoas tendon over the pelvic brim. Painless snapping needs no treatment. Painful snapping usually means the tendon or the underlying bursa is irritated, and it responds to guided treatment plus a movement correction.

Also called: coxa saltans, dancer's hip

Symptoms patients describe

  • An audible or palpable snap with hip flexion
  • Snapping while running, cycling, or dancing
  • Pain in the front or the side of the hip with the snap
  • Symptoms after a jump in training volume

Diagnosis

How It's Confirmed Here

  1. 01

    Hands-on exam

Each structure is loaded separately so the source is narrowed before any imaging is ordered.

  2. 02

    Imaging review

Your existing films are reviewed independently by Dr. Hyzy — not just the outside report.

  3. 03

    In-room ultrasound

Dynamic imaging while you move, so tissue quality and behavior are seen live.

  4. 04

    Diagnostic guided injection

When more than one structure could be responsible, a targeted block confirms which one is.
