Second opinions before spine and joint surgery are a core part of this practice, and imaging findings alone rarely settle the question.
The Short Answer
What This Pattern Usually Means
Most spine and joint operations are elective, which means there is time to understand your options. Degenerative findings on MRI — disc bulges, meniscal tears, labral fraying, rotator cuff changes — are extremely common in people with no symptoms at all. A finding on a film is not automatically the cause of your pain.
A useful second opinion reviews the actual images rather than the report, examines you, and correlates the two. It should end with a clear statement of what is driving your symptoms, what non-surgical options genuinely offer, and where surgery is the honest answer.
Some patients do need an operation, and we say so plainly when that is the case. Many others have never had the non-surgical path laid out properly.
